Well…not quite, but we are definitely getting close! Our leadership began preparing for Camp RYLA 2009 the day they departed from Midlothian in 2008, but the work is starting to really pick up.
RYLA Roundup, the annual event kicking off Rotary District 5810’s Camp RYLA, was held February 7th at the Addison Conference center. The meeting was attended by a representative of each Rotary club as well as by several of our camp’s fabulous leaders, including presenters Mark Healy, (The World’s Greatest Activities Director) Dr. Dana Mackison, and Big Jim Duffy. These men, along with our district governor, welcomed attendees and presented vital information regarding action needed over the next few months to maintain camp schedule and quality.
Several members of the alumni group made an appearance, and the Advisory Committee arrived in full force! It looks like we have a very strong group of students preparing to be assistant counselors this year (a mark of a fabulous camp in ‘08! Way to go, everyone!). Advisory Committee members helped set up and tear down, and made themselves available to chat with club representatives about their camp experiences, as well as to give their opinions on the nuts and bolts of the camper selection process. The representatives were obviously very pleased to get energetic and whole-hearted first-hand stories.
So, what does this mean for us as alumni? First of all, please take note that your hometown club is just starting the selection process for this year’s campers. If you can be of any help to them, please make the effort to offer your time and energy–as alumni, we have a unique knowledge and understanding of the program, and any assistance our clubs might accept from us would truly benefit the camp as a whole. Secondly, DON’T FORGET TO APPLY FOR CAMP! Applications are available on the alumni blog, so please, fill it out and e-mail or snail-mail it to Mark by the end of March. Note: This is a NEW application, and more time-consuming than before, so please provide adequate time to give it its proper attention.
