MONDAY
Instead of being tied together in pairs by handkerchiefs or holding hands, the campers ran free and played a more graceful version of the classic camp game. After a SUDDEN DEATH round, Cabin 4 accepted the first place ribbon.

John (and Katie) Huber are back at camp this year! Woo.

John took all of the camp pictures, and for the first time in recent memory, the campers and staff members were quickly captured on film and sent to the lunchroom on time.
Egg Drop, Picnic, and Scavenger Hunt
Captain Sly cleverly commanded the egg drop crew this year. Cabins created various types of shuttles for their astronauts (Neil Eggstrong, Seymour, Francisco something something Legitimus, aka Coco, and Captain Commando the Naked Egg) and two cabins were able to successfully launch their astronauts (at least the first time). The campers were also inventive this year as they scrambled to find the objects on the scavenger hunt. To satisfy the Egyptian tooth requirement, they used stickers and craft paper fashioned to resemble these ancient artifacts.

During a short break, Travis and Lauren W. proved their flair for the dramatic with a reenacted a song/scene from “Sister Act.” Footage forthcoming!
TUESDAY
Obstacle course and volleyball. The volleyball tournament was one of the better years for sportsmanship according to one of the referees. At lunch, one staff member even heard one of the campers express his hope that the cabin without any ribbons would win an event so they too could have a ribbon on their (almost completed) flags.

At lunch, Mark decided to interview some of the ACs. Tevin came to the “stage” and Mark mentioned how he hadn’t seen his dad, who went to Iraq with the Army, in 14 months. Seconds later, Tevin’s dad walked out from a closed off section in the lunch room. His dad was back in Texas but only driving through the area on his way to an army site, but Tevin and his dad got to spend lunch together.

Check also some of the crazy hats/socks brought by the campers and staff members.
I think we’ve all seen this one before

The practice obstacle course was (perhaps understandably) a challenge for some of the cabin groups as they struggled to communicate with one another. Some helpful strategies for you if you ever try to balance on a log with seven other people: try holding your breath and looking at your teammates instead of looking at the ground or focus on yoga tactics to last 5 seconds (or 6-7 seconds if Dana’s counting).
The beam also provides an excellent way to for us alumni to practice our communication skills. See Katie and Leslie practicing on the beam below.
Talent Night
Awards went to (1) a hoola hooper who used multiple rings to swing around her waist, arms and legs, and waist, (2) a country singer, and (3) a poet.
The alumni group also gave a RYLA rendition of Queen’s Bohemian Rhaphsody, though it appeared many of the campers did not know the song/singer. Scooter conducted our RYLA choir. Jeff also graced the stage in a purple Lycra suit as RYLA man and burst through a paper wrapped hoola hoop in an ode to the man on the back of our gray t-shirts. One camper yelled out, “what is that?!” as Jeff hoola hooped and ribbon danced across the stage with Sly, but it was definitely a crowd favorite.
